How to Start Making a Big Life Change

Introduction

Change is one of life’s few certainties. Yet, it often makes us uncomfortable—that’s just how we’re wired.

Whether you’re considering a career shift, starting a business, navigating redundancy, or planning early retirement, the prospect of change can feel overwhelming. What outcome are you aiming for? How do you begin? And what if it’s the wrong decision?

As a life coach focused on creating and managing change, I know answers to these questions don’t come easily. This is completely normal. But I’ve seen how clients make incredible progress when they start small, take action, and build momentum along the way. Change begins with clarity and unfolds through simple, intentional steps.

Are you standing at the crossroads of a big decision? Do you see an opportunity but aren’t sure how to take it?

Here’s a four-step process to help you get started.

Step 1: Clarify What You Truly Want

The first step toward meaningful change is to clarify what you’re aiming for and why. It may seem obvious, but many of us get stuck because we haven’t taken time to go beneath the surface. Understanding what’s driving your desire for change is key to moving forward.

Ask yourself: What’s driving my desire for change? What outcomes am I truly seeking? Will this bring more freedom, joy, purpose, connection—or something else entirely?

Invest quality time reflecting on these questions when you’re at your best. Meditation or walking can help focus your thoughts. Write them down. Be honest with yourself. Revisit your answers as they evolve.

Clarity often comes from asking powerful questions:

  • What would you value above everything else when you achieve your goal?

  • What is the cost of maintaining the status quo?

  • How will you know when you’ve succeeded?

This step isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about uncovering what matters most to you.

Step 2: Explore the Possibilities

Change can feel uncomfortable because it stirs up our fear of the unknown. While we could dive into the science behind this, the key takeaway is simple: the best antidote to fear is curiosity—explore what’s possible.

Start by gathering information and connecting with people who have been where you are now. Their stories can inspire and guide you.

For example:

  • Changing career? Use your network to connect with professionals in your desired field.

  • Starting a business? Talk to your contacts or others who’ve started their own ventures. Learn from their successes and challenges.

  • Planning early retirement? Speak with others who’ve made the transition. Listen to podcasts for insights and guidance.

Exploring possibilities helps reduce the unknowns and reframes fear as curiosity. This isn’t about making immediate decisions—it’s about opening your mind to what’s out there.

Step 3: Plan Small, Manageable Steps

Now that you’ve clarified your goals and explored some options, it’s time to take action—but start small.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how close are you to your goal? If you’re at a 3, ask yourself: what small step could move you to a 4 or 5? Breaking things down into smaller, achievable actions builds momentum and confidence.

Here are some examples:

  • Changing career? Update your CV or LinkedIn profile. Contact a recruiter or sign up for a course.

  • Starting a business? Write down your business idea and the problem it solves. Research your audience and competitors.

  • Planning early retirement? Start by reviewing your finances or speaking with a financial advisor.

Small wins lead to bigger results. They create progress and build a sense of accomplishment, helping you move steadily toward your goals.

Step 4: Commit, But Stay Flexible

You won’t reach your goals without action. Set a realistic timeline and hold yourself accountable. Think ahead: what obstacles might arise, and how can you minimize them?

Also, recognize that plans evolve. Stay open to learning, adapting, and refining your approach as you go. The key is to commit and take action, even if the first step feels small or uncertain. Momentum builds confidence. And with confidence, you can overcome challenges and seize opportunities that once felt out of reach.

Embracing Positive Change

The change you’re dreaming of might feel out of reach, but by following this process, it becomes entirely possible. Whether you’re at the start of your journey or already partway there, remember: you don’t have to do it all at once. Start with clarity. Explore your options. Take small steps. And trust that the path will unfold as you move forward.
